Inaugural Invitational Advisory Council | Sara Gallagher
Sara Gallagher is a contemporary figurative artist and accomplished draftsperson whose practice encompasses both pure graphite drawing and a distinctive mixed-media technique combining graphite with PanPastel. She received her BFA with dual emphases in Painting & Drawing and Photography from San Francisco State University and later studied with German hyperrealist Dirk Dzimirsky. Her graphite works demonstrate exceptional control of value, texture, and form, while her self-developed mixed-media process introduces restrained color and painterly fluidity without sacrificing the structural precision of drawing.
Gallagher describes her work as Emotional Realism. Many drawings develop through vulnerable conversations with members of the community concerning resilience, grief, identity, intimacy, transition, and connection. Through psychologically charged figures, unusual vantage points, expressive cropping, domestic settings, and symbolic objects, she makes interior experiences visible while addressing broader questions of bodily identity, social expectation, memory, relationships, and personal transformation. Each work is accompanied by a written statement and a question directed to the viewer, extending the drawing into an invitation for reflection and dialogue. Her practice seeks to challenge taboos surrounding emotional and mental health while fostering recognition, solidarity, transparency, and support among those who see their own experiences reflected in the work.
Gallagher received First Place in Drawing in the 17th Art Renewal Center Salon and Best Drawing in the 2023 Almenara Art Prize. Her work Retrospect received the Award of Excellence—second overall—in the twenty-fifth Pastel 100 and appeared on the cover of Pastel Journal’s twenty-fifth-anniversary issue. She has also received repeated recognition from Strokes of Genius, the Beautiful Bizarre Art Prize, and Manifest’s International Drawing Annual.
Represented by CK Contemporary in San Francisco, Gallagher also teaches and mentors artists in graphite, mixed media, concept development, and portfolio critique. Her mastery of graphite, innovative use of dry media, compositional imagination, and socially engaged symbolism give her particular authority in evaluating figurative, narrative, and contemporary works on paper.
