B. J. Parker is a figurative painter, draftsman, educator, and founder and Artistic Director of Gateway Atelier of Classical Art in St. Louis, Missouri. Established in 2018 and recognized as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2025, GACA offers a four-year certificate program in classical drawing and painting. Under Parker’s artistic leadership, its curriculum progresses from foundational drawing and painting through advanced study, specialization, sustained mentorship, and professional preparation.
After years in ministry, Parker pursued a Ph.D. in Ancient Near Eastern Religion at Baylor University. While completing his dissertation, he recognized that his search for the sublime and his visual practice were not separate pursuits, decided to pursue an artistic career, and enrolled at the nearby Texas Academy of Figurative Art. He later continued his training with Sadie Valeri and Patricia Watwood. His practice is grounded in close observation, working from life, and traditional methods associated with Renaissance and Baroque art.
Parker is best known for large-scale, multi-figure narrative paintings that place the human figure among artifacts, architectural fragments, and symbolically charged objects. Developed through exploratory sketching and direct study from life, these works combine observational rigor with layered allegory, examining how inherited myths shape identity, how they fail, and how people search for renewed meaning.
Parker has been designated an Art Renewal Center Associate Living Master. Through his studio practice and leadership at Gateway Atelier, he treats classical technique not as historical imitation, but as a living language for examining human relationships, forgotten stories, and encounters with the sublime. His work seeks to evoke wonder and productive restlessness, inviting viewers to reconsider the value of individual life and humanity’s continuing capacity to create meaning. His rigorous classical foundation in drawing and painting, extensive experience in instruction and critique, and command of layered symbolism and complex, multi-figure narrative painting give him particular authority in evaluating figurative, portrait, and symbolically ambitious representational work.
