Lisa N. Peters, Ph.D., is an independent scholar specializing in American art from the colonial period to the present. She earned her doctorate in art history from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, an M.A. in Visual Arts Administration from New York University, and a B.A. in Art History from Colorado College. She has held teaching appointments at Pratt Institute, the Fashion Institute of Technology, the City College of New York, and St. Joseph’s University, teaching American and European art history from the Renaissance through modernism.

For nearly twenty-seven years, Peters served as Director of Research and Publications at Spanierman Gallery in New York, where she directed and contributed research and writing for publications, exhibitions, digital content, press materials, and clients. Her extensive publication and editorial record spans American Impressionism and Tonalism, landscape, portraiture, still life, works on paper, and contemporary representational art.

Peters is the author of the definitive John Henry Twachtman Catalogue Raisonné, documenting more than 750 works by the American Impressionist and representing over twenty-five years of research. She also curated Life and Art: The Greenwich Paintings of John Henry Twachtman for the Greenwich Historical Society and authored its accompanying catalogue.

Her longstanding research on women artists, allegory, gender, and professional agency culminated in her 2026 Routledge monograph, Reframing Allegory in Work by American Women Painters of the Gilded Age: Six Case Studies. The book recovers overlooked works by six American women painters and examines how they used allegory to express agency, intellect, identity, self-sufficiency, empathy, and resilience while appropriating and subverting a long-established artistic tradition.

Peters’ deep knowledge of American art history, experience in the close study of artworks, and expertise in scholarly interpretation and the visual languages of allegory and symbolism enable her to situate contemporary representational work within its broader artistic lineage and bring exceptional depth to the analysis of narrative, symbolic, and historically engaged art.
